‘La Bola Negra’ Wins Oscar Predictive Toronto Film Festival People’s Choice Award

The People’s Choice Award for the recently concluded 51st Toronto International Film Festival has been awarded to the works of Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi for La Bola Negra. The film follows closely behind in the honors, with Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky claiming second place and Siân Heder’s Being Heumann taking third. Additional distinctions at the event included Simon Stone’s Elsinore receiving the International People’s Choice, while Barry Avrich’s Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been secured second place in the Documentary category. Matthew Rankin’s Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney were honoured with the Midnight Madness Award. Most significantly, La Bola Negra stands as Spain’s official submission for the International Film competition, positioning the film as a strong contender for consideration at subsequent Oscar ceremonies.

The People’s Choice Award, voting annually since 1978, has historically guided films with potential for Academy Awards success, launching careers of future Best Picture nominees such as Nomadland and Green Book. This recent triumph underscores the enduring relevance of audience-driven selections within the broader global film industry.

Beyond the People’s Choice accolades, the shortlisted winners include special recognitions such as the Honourable Mention granted to Brace Your Heart. Notable achievements in ancillary categories were achieved by the Short Cuts Awards, highlighting MAMMALIA as the Best International Short Film and Cody Lightning’s Smudge the Blades in the Best Canadian Short Film category. In the documentary section, Thirteen in Gaza by Hosam Abu Dan received the NETPAC Award for its poignant portrayal of conflict in Palestine. Finally, the Best Canadian Feature Film Award was given to Serville Poblete for Sunburn, cementing the year’s leading contribution to Canadian cinema.

Additional honours were bestowed upon the Platform Prize winner Angh by Indian filmmaker Theja Rio, which grants international eligibility for the Olympic Games. The Special Jury Award for Brace Your Heart acknowledged its subtle exploration of contemporary themes. These triumphs, combined with the People’s Choice sweep, reinforce the critical mass of talent showcased at TIFF.
