Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara has discussed his collapsed Chelsea transfer, suggesting Liverpool may now have a chance to secure the Senegalese international.
Camara was poised to join Chelsea on deadline day after the Premier League club agreed a fee of roughly £47 million with Monaco. However, the deal fell through at the last moment when Monaco blocked the transfer.
Camara Reflects on the Chelsea Setback
The 22‑year‑old has spoken publicly, saying he has moved past the disappointment and remains fully committed to his duties at Monaco.
“It was a somewhat turbulent and difficult time,” the 22-year-old explained via TEAMtalk. “But that’s part of a player’s life. I tried to remain professional, avoid dwelling on it, and move on so I could quickly focus on the upcoming match in Paris (September 4, a 2–1 win). Once it was over, there was no point thinking about it.”
Camara added: Did I want to go to Chelsea? Saying that now would imply I’m no longer fully present with the team.
“Yes, there was a possibility I might leave, but it didn’t happen at the last minute. These things happen. Look at the example of Julian Alvarez with Atlético Madrid. It happens all over the world, and I’m trying to turn the page as quickly as possible to focus on the season.”
Camara had completed a medical and was preparing for a move to Stamford Bridge, having also held talks with Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso. He was expected to fill the void left by Enzo Fernández after the Argentine’s £125 million switch to Manchester City.
Despite the deal being far advanced, Monaco ultimately refused to grant his release.
The Senegalese international has nevertheless made clear that he remains keen to test himself in the Premier League, leaving the door open for a future move.
Could Liverpool Pursue Camara in January?
Liverpool have been linked with Camara since the Chelsea deal fell apart, and the Reds may seek to capitalize when the transfer window reopens.
The midfielder is rated at roughly €55 million, suggesting Monaco are unlikely to accept a discounted fee despite the summer’s failed transfer.
Liverpool had previously contemplated delaying a bid, and the present circumstances could enable them to renew their interest.
Camara’s versatility, work rate, and defensive abilities make him an appealing option for Arne Slot’s midfield, and his ambition to play in England could boost Liverpool’s prospects of landing him.
