As part of the settlement agreement, the social media conglomerate has committed to implementing comprehensive changes to Instagram and Facebook’s operations for its youngest user base.
Industry specialists maintain that these safeguards are long overdue.
The newly introduced protections feature a two-hour daily usage cap across both platforms, set as the default for identified teenage users. Notably, direct messaging functions will be excluded from this daily limit.
Push notifications will be automatically disabled between midnight and 6:00 AM, as well as during school hours from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Additionally, all likes on posts and content will be concealed from teenage users on both platforms.
The majority of these protective measures are scheduled to become defaults or optional settings for teens within six months.
However, Meta’s enhanced systems for identifying underage users on its platforms will require up to one year to fully deploy.
These safeguards are unlikely to remain confined to the United States for long, as international jurisdictions will almost certainly seek to adopt similar standards.
Meta has acknowledged that these new features will achieve maximum effectiveness only if competitors across the industry implement comparable protections.
Despite the highly competitive nature of the social media sector, the mounting global scrutiny regarding platforms’ impact on young users may compel competitors such as TikTok and Snapchat to introduce similar measures.
A critical question emerges: will teenagers continue engaging with platforms that have been deliberately stripped down to a more restrained experience?
Such a development could potentially usher in a gradual decline of the social media era as current adult users age out of these platforms.
Arturo Bejar, a former Instagram engineer who became a whistleblower, emphasized that the true measure of success lies in whether these new teenage safety features deliver measurable outcomes.
“Ultimately, Meta must be answerable for results, not merely for the efforts undertaken,” he stated in comments to this publication.
