Lando Norris will test McLaren’s new MCL‑HY hypercar at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with the session scheduled for Monday 14 September.
The run will give the Woking team valuable feedback from the 2025 Formula 1 champion as they continue developing the MCL‑HY, the car slated to contest the FIA World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2027.
Powered by a twin‑turbo V6 mid‑engine delivering 697 hp, the hypercar is a McLaren‑Dallara collaboration, with McLaren handling overall design and Dallara responsible for the chassis.
Norris, who already sampled the MCL‑HY at Goodwood, has repeatedly expressed his desire to try Le Mans, saying in a May 2026 McLaren YouTube video that he still wants to explore other disciplines and hopes to share the experience with his future children.
He reiterated that ambition during the 2025 Azerbaijan GP weekend, telling reporters he would “love” to take on the endurance challenge.

Norris’s trip to Portugal comes after the Spanish Grand Prix at the newly opened Madring circuit, where he started from pole but lost the lead due to an ill‑timed virtual safety car.
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli claimed his eighth win of the season, joining Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on the podium while Norris finished third.
Antonelli’s victory stretched his championship lead to 81 points over teammate George Russell, with Norris lying fourth behind Lewis Hamilton.
