Larry David expressed strong disapproval of Donald Trump’s recent UFC bout at the White House. During the premiere of his new HBO series, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, David stated the event left him feeling “embarrassed” to identify as American.
Labeling the match a “travesty,” David proclaimed, “What else can you say about it? It was embarrassing. I was embarrassed to be an American,” according to Variety.
Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, premiering June 26 on HBO, is a satirical sketch comedy series that reimagines pivotal moments in U.S. history through humor. The show features notable guest appearances by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bill Hader, Kathryn Hahn, Jon Hamm, Henry Winkler, Sean Hayes, Joe Manganiello, Jane Krakowski, Greg Kinnear, Alan Tudyk, Rita Wilson, and Jerry Seinfeld.
Barack Obama, whose production company Higher Ground spearheaded the series, also stars in an episode. David remarked that Obama possesses “perfect” comedic timing, noting his “really good” ad-libbing abilities during the scene.
The Obamas initiated contact with David about the project. “I know the president a little,” David shared. “We played golf together, and I did a Super Bowl ad years ago in costumes. Maybe that influenced their decision, or perhaps they just appreciate Curb.”
