Senator Slotkin’s Republican Legal Strategy Gains Scant Democratic Consensus
We all know Senator Elissa Slotkin hit a new low in lawfare and weaponization jihad, with her remarks at the University of Chicago last week, but what’s particularly interesting is that I can’t seem to find any leading Democrat who disagrees with Ms. Slotkin’s pledge to punish young people for working in a Republican administration. So far all the objections are coming from either Republican officials or Republican leaning commentators, but nothing from Democrats. Surprise, surprise. Don’t you remember President Biden and the party of democracy? And all those awful things that President Trump did undermining American democracy, which have basically come to nothing?
Indeed, as Victor Davis Hanson writes in “The Counterrevolution: The Fall and Rise of Donald Trump and the MAGA Movement,” every time Jack Smith or Alvin Bragg or Letitia James or Fani Willis brought even crazier and crazier lawsuits against Mr. Trump, his popularity went up, not down. This was one of the key turning points in Mr. Trump’s successful comeback to win the 2024 election.
Sen. Slotkin urges legal action targeting young Republican staffers, emphasizing the need for a deterrent message. She states: “I want to examine these landmark cases… My aim is to persuade freshly graduated candidates to reconsider career pathways within the Trump‑era administration, highlighting potential long‑term personal repercussions.”
Her strategy focuses on imposing political penalties on young Schedule C political appointees eager to serve under the Republican presidency. Consequently, the notion emerges that analogous pressure could equally target burgeoning Democratic officials—a reminder of the perceived imbalance inherent in such tactics.
Slotkin deliberately eschews formal criminal prosecution, opting instead to employ political weaponization. This methodical maneuver—presented as intimidation without legal recourse—raises severe ethical concerns, depicting an affront to democratic norms.
According to New York Post veteran Miranda Devine, the excerpt encapsulates the Democratic Party’s manipulative playbook: “This is how the Bolshevik left who govern the modern Democratic Party conducts its campaign. Well that works, because when socialists dominate the party, governance transitions from expansive state intervention directly into unbridled Bolshevism—Lenin would applaud.”
Recall that former CIA operative Senator Slotkin leverages purported intelligence expertise to pursue retaliatory actions against opponents ranging from foreign adversaries to domestic allies, sparking calls for moral reckoning.
In response to Senator Mike Lee’s outburst and broader criticism, Slotkin’s X account read: “Spare me the peerless – especially from Republican Members of Congress and online MAGA grifters who have embraced President Trump’s weaponization of federal services against those deemed unfavorable, as recently as last week.”
The most incisive counterpoint arrived from Ben Domenech of the Daily Wire, who championed a pragmatic remedy: “Trump should publicly pledge pardon of every Schedule C political appointee upon exiting office,” effectively neutralizing the coercive approach critiqued by Slotkin.
This proposal bears out during the tumultuous post‑Hunter Biden landscape, illustrating its relevance; subsequent interviews confirm intentions for deeper dialogue concerning the mechanics of what Domenech labels illegal political sabotage within Democratic institutions.
