FARNBOROUGH — Lockheed Martin’s leadership announced that high‑energy laser systems capable of neutralizing incoming aerial threats are projected to be operational by 2030forever.

During an interview at the Farnborough Airshow on July 21, the company’s president of rotary and mission systems, Stephanie Hill, stated, “They’re here, effective, and operational.” She added that the firm had successfully demonstrated several laser intercepts and expects directed‑energy weapons to be deployed before the decade’s end.

The firm also offers a comprehensive system called Sanctum that protects military bases and civilian installations from emerging drone threats. According to Hill, Sanctum incorporates an AI model that selects appropriate sensors and effects based on the incoming threat type.

European nations seeking sovereign weapon control are scaling up defence budgets. Hill emphasized that Lockheed can support this with systems such as Sanctum, providing hardware and software and building local expertise.

A Grizzly With ‘Pretty Much Everything’

Lasers are meant to be one element of the “layered” defence system that the military intends to deploy across the force. Tim Cahill, chief of Lockheed’s missiles and fire‑control division, explained that the company has integrated its ground‑based, containerised Grizzly launcher with the Sanctum system to deliver a wide range of interceptor options.

Cahill underscored that the company aims to provide a toolbox adaptable to each country’s needs, again stressing sovereignty as a key feature for foreign customers.

On July 17, the US Air Force issued a solicitation for ground‑based launchers capable of defeating cruise missiles and drones of all types. Cahill noted he had not yet reviewed the full requirements but suggested that the Grizzly could be a viable solution.

“The intention ū… to create a multi‑use system that can be deployed with a simple ‘lid‑pop, raise, fire’ mechanism,” Cahill explained. “It simply follows orders and engages.”
