An F‑16 fighter jet belonging to the French Air Force intercepted and destroyed a drone that had entered Latvian airspace from Russia early Monday, marking another security incident along the EU’s eastern frontier amid Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.
NATO officials authorized the shoot‑down after confirming the presence of Russian electronic warfare activity in the region, according to Latvian Defence Minister Raivis Melnis. The drone was brought down near the village of Berzgale, about 20 miles from the Russian‑Latvian border, with no reported damage or injuries.
