Lavonte David, who announced his retirement in March, has recently reconsidered his decision after the Buccaneers roster welcomed rookie edge rusher Rueben Bain. During an interview on This is Football with ESPN’s Kevin Clark, David acknowledged Bain’s potential as part of an “amazing” Tampa Bay unit while acknowledging his own doubts about leaving the team before fully bonding with the University of Miami standout.
David shared that Bain had reached out to him after his draft selection, expressing a wish for David to have waited an additional season. This revelation led David to question whether he erred in retiring before experiencing gameplay alongside Bain. However, he clarified that the move was finalized and that he remains committed to supporting Bain’s development in Tampa. The linebacker also noted his confidence in the rookie’s ability to thrive alongside seasoned teammates, whom he described as “animals.”
While David has no immediate plans to return to the field, he has expressed interest in transitioning to coaching. Should such a shift occur in Tampa, he believes his experience could prove invaluable in guiding Bain and maximizing his potential on the team.
