Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in the United States on Friday to attend a meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Atlanta, according to state-owned TASS news agency.
The two-day gathering of major economies convenes against a backdrop of entrenched global stalemates, including the conflict between the U.S. and Iran and the ongoing war in Ukraine, all while elevated oil prices continue to strain the global economy.
The talks in Georgia come just days before crucial U.S. midterm elections and are expected to set the agenda for the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December in Miami at President Donald Trump’s Doral resort. Moscow indicated Thursday that Lavrov intends to use his address to argue against the continuation of international sanctions on Russia.
The ministerial meeting also precedes fresh diplomatic efforts involving officials from Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington aimed at brokering an end to the war in Ukraine.
