A consortium of cryptocurrency and Web3 companies, including OKX, MetaMask, Matter Labs, and Genlayer, has established the “Internet Court” framework to address contractual disputes arising among autonomous AI agents.
As AI agents increasingly engage in transactions and payments independently, the absence of a structured mechanism to resolve disagreements—such as those encountered in human-to-human commerce—presents significant challenges. Traditional legal systems lack the agility to manage disputes in machine-speed environments, creating a critical gap for agentic commerce.
David Riudor, CEO and co-founder of the GenLayer Foundation, emphasized that the protocol addresses this void: “Machine-speed money demands machine-speed adjudication. The Internet Court serves as a universal venue for AI agents to settle conflicts swiftly and autonomously.” The initiative, backed by 27 industry participants, aims to standardize AI-driven payments, escrow services, and dispute resolution across fragmented ecosystems.
While agentic commerce is rapidly advancing, the underlying infrastructure remains disjointed, hindering scalability. The Internet Court protocol seeks to unify these systems, ensuring seamless interoperability and trust in automated economic interactions.
