Speculation had surrounded whether James would use his appearance at Fanatics Fest in New York on Thursday to announce his next team, but fans were left without an update.
Tyrese Haliburton, guest co-host of the live taping of the “Mind the Game” podcast, attempted to prompt the announcement, echoing ESPN’s Dave McMenamin’s reporting.
Haliburton asked, “Is there a decision that still has to be made?” to which James responded, “We literally talked about this in the back, Rese. My decision won’t be announced today.”
Later during the Boardroom Game Plan presented by CNBC Sport, James confirmed a decision is near but emphasized it’s not simple. He cited family considerations, including his son Bronny remaining with the Lakers, his daughter Zhuri staying in Los Angeles, and coordinating with his wife and family. “People are like, ‘hurry up and make a damn decision,’ ” James said. “It’s not just about the team. There’s so many other factors I’m factoring in: What best fits me as a player, as a person, my happiness, and my family. I won’t hold you guys up too much longer, but the family portion is huge for me.”
James added, “It’s going to be pretty fun wherever I land. I’m going to do what I do best.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, speaking at the same event, noted that James’s choice impacts scheduling adjustments. “We have to finish up the schedule and where LeBron plays affects the schedule… Opening week, Christmas. So I need him to make a decision,” Silver said.
Final Pitches to LeBron
Teams have concluded their pitches, with Cleveland leading as the most likely destination per NBC Sports sources. Other contenders include Miami, Philadelphia, and Golden State, reuniting with Stephen Curry, or Minnesota. James appears focused on a Western Conference exit, favoring a path to victory over facing Eastern powerhouses like the defending champions and avoiding the Thunder and Spurs’ dominance in the West.
Pat Riley of the Heat captured the sentiment: “Everybody is just waiting for LeBron to announce his decision.”
James’s choice will trigger a cascade of moves, as teams pivot to alternative plans. Most franchises have already wrapped up their offseason business, leaving his announcement as the final catalyst for a flurry of signings and roster adjustments.
