Leeds United have been advised to pursue Norwegian international goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, who is currently unattached following the expiration of his contract with Sevilla. Nyland has delivered standout performances for Norway at the ongoing World Cup, and former scout Mick Brown suggests the Yorkshire club could target the shot-stopper in the summer window.
Leeds Monitoring Nyland Amid Goalkeeping Search
“They’ve been aware that they need a new goalkeeper and scouts have been watching some of their targets, while they will also have been keeping an eye on the World Cup.
“Norway’s goalkeeper, Orjan Nyland, has had an outstanding tournament so far and I would be very surprised if he wasn’t somebody they had a look at.
“If he could perform for Leeds the way he has for Norway so far, he would be a significant upgrade on their current options, and they could certainly do a lot worse.
“His age probably isn’t ideal, he wouldn’t be a signing for the future, but on a free transfer it’s definitely something to explore.”
The Whites undoubtedly require greater quality between the posts. Karl Darlow is approaching the latter stage of his career, while Illan Meslier has departed the club upon the conclusion of his contract.
Nyland Represents a Calculated Free-Agent Acquisition
Leeds United must secure a dependable goalkeeper, and Nyland could emerge as a shrewd addition. The 35-year-old has operated at a high level during the World Cup and possesses the calibre to compete in the Premier League, albeit as a short-term solution.
A return to English football is likely to appeal to the player at this juncture, and persuasion should not prove challenging given his prior experience with Aston Villa.
Furthermore, capturing a keeper of his pedigree and experience without a transfer fee would constitute an astute piece of business.
With multiple squad departments requiring reinforcement, a cost-free acquisition in goal would liberate funds for investment elsewhere.
The resolution of this potential move will become clearer in the coming weeks.
