Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced his resignation on Thursday following the left-wing opposition’s narrow victory in the general election.
“The speaker of parliament will now lead the next steps toward forming a new government,” Kristersson stated in a letter to the speaker, which he shared on social media. “To allow this process to begin immediately, I am requesting to be relieved of my duties as prime minister.”
The four-party left-wing bloc, headed by Magdalena Andersson’s Social Democrats, secured a three-seat majority in the 349-seat parliament, surpassing Kristersson’s right-wing alliance, which includes the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats.
However, the margin between the two sides was remarkably narrow, separated by roughly 50,000 votes in a nation of 10.6 million people.
