Leicestershire Announces Appeal Against 27‑Point Deduction for Pitch Issue

Leicestershire County Cricket Club has announced it will contest a 27‑point deduction imposed for the condition of the pitch they prepared for their Division One match against Glamorgan last August.

The independent Cricket Discipline Panel imposed a £5,000 fine, stripped the club of the 19 points earned from the Glamorgan victory and added an eight‑point penalty, relegating them to the foot of the table.

The club had a ten‑day window to decide, and chief executive Emma White confirmed the appeal will be lodged on the morning of their final 2026 Championship fixture away to Warwickshire, who remain in contention for the title.

“We respect the ongoing Cricket Discipline Panel process,” she said.

“However, we have serious concerns about the process that led to the panel’s decision on the charge and the sanctioning procedure. I can confirm that the club will be appealing,” she added.

The club has instructed specialist sports law barrister Craig Harris of Furnival Chambers to advise and represent it, and Oliver Laurence of Periculum Sport to provide independent expert and strategic support throughout the appeal.

“The panel itself found that the club did not intend the pitch to play as it did and that this was not a case of cheating. Our grounds team has an outstanding record, and I am proud of the work they do,” she said.

“As we intend to appeal, it would not be appropriate for the club to comment further at this stage. I would ask all supporters to do the same, and to treat everyone involved—including players, staff from other counties, and those involved with administering this process—with courtesy and respect, both at the ground and online,” she said.

This leaves the County Championship concluding this Sunday with uncertainty over which two clubs will be relegated to Division Two for 2027. Hampshire have already dropped out, but the Foxes’ fate could also affect Surrey, who face Somerset (another of the three title‑chasing sides), as well as Essex and Glamorgan, who meet in Cardiff.
