Li Qiang Extends Congratulations to Andy Burnham on Prime Minister Appointment

Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday extended congratulations to Andy Burnham on becoming Britain’s new prime minister.

Strengthening dialogue and cooperation between China and Britain will benefit both countries and contribute to global stability, Li stated in his message, Reuters reported.

“I am eager to work with the prime minister to enhance exchanges, build mutual trust, and advance the long-term, stable comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations,” Li added.

During his first call with US President Donald Trump, Burnham assured Trump that London would remain committed to defense and security and support the safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Burnham’s office confirmed in a statement on Monday.

“The prime minister emphasized his dedication to defense and security, stating that ensuring the UK’s and its allies’ safety remains a top priority,” a Downing Street spokesperson said in a readout of the call, which occurred shortly after Burnham’s inauguration.

“The president then provided updates on the Middle East situation, while the prime minister outlined the UK’s commitment to maintaining shipping flows in the Strait of Hormuz to support global supply chains and reduce costs for businesses and families nationwide.”
