Liam Gallagher has responded following a 50% increase in streams of ‘Wonderwall’ ahead of England’s World Cup match against Ghana.
After the team’s 4‑2 victory over Croatia, fans across the country sang the 1995 classic, creating a vibrant atmosphere on the pitch.
England players, including Harry Kane, expressed gratitude for the crowd’s enthusiasm, while midfielders such as Jude Bellingham and Anthony Gordon were seen mouthing the lyrics.
In a recent interview with The Sun, Noel Gallagher praised the song’s unifying power, stating that “‘Wonderwall’ belongs to the people, and it was a magical moment between the people and the players,” and wishing everyone who attended the event the best.
Spotify has reported a 50% rise in UK listening figures for the track in the lead‑up to England’s clash with Ghana, designating it as the tournament’s unofficial anthem.
“The 1995 classic has seen a resurgence, with a 50% spike in UK streams — an impressive lift given its long‑standing fanbase,” the company noted.
Liam Gallagher replied on X, writing, “And rightly so it’s a fucking classic and I sound BIBLICAL on it.”

Recalling the post‑match celebration, England midfielder Declan Rice remarked that the fans’ sing‑along was a special moment of connection.
“Being in Dallas and hearing ‘Wonderwall’ sung by supporters was unlike anything else,” he said.
Harry Kane added that the experience ranked among his most cherished moments while wearing an England shirt in a major tournament, emphasizing the emotional bond with supporters.
“They see how much it means to us, and we feel that connection now,” Kane noted.
Each nation has submitted a pre‑and post‑match playlist for stadium playback. In addition to ‘Wonderwall’, England’s list includes The Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’ and Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’ (according to Metro).
John Stones, a Manchester City defender and Oasis admirer, assembled a playlist that featured the band’s guitarist in 2018, noting that City players “always walk in” to ‘Wonderwall’. Gallagher responded, “Would you not prefer ‘Rock And Roll Star’? ‘Wonderwall’ feels like a melancholy farewell, not a pre‑derby anthem.”
‘Wonderwall’ – taken from Oasis’ second album ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’ – peaked at Number Two on the UK singles chart upon release and has become one of the best‑selling tracks of all time, despite never reaching Number One.
In 2024 the song was identified as the most‑streamed track from the 1970s‑1990s era and remains the top‑selling Britpop single of the 1990s. It also featured on the setlist of Oasis’ 2024 reunion tour.
Gallagher was captured singing along to ‘Wonderwall’ during the celebrations when Manchester City secured the Premier League title in 2019.
England’s next World Cup 2026 fixture will be played tonight (Tuesday, June 23) against Ghana in the group stage, followed by a match against Panama on Saturday, June 27.
