Libya’s Tripoli Overrun by Flooding as Extreme Rains Paralyse the Capital Tripoli: Profound flooding swept through the capital’s streets on Tuesday, turning roads into river‑like channels. The deluge submerged vehicles and claimed the life of a Jumhouria Bank employee who was electrocuted near the bank building. Authorities issued calls for public services to initiate emergency draining operations, while security forces closed the city ring road. Jumhouria Bank disclosed on Tuesday that one of its workers died after being electrocuted as he entered the bank’s head office during rising waters. To mitigate the hazard, the General Electricity Company took the measure to shut power supplies in several Tripoli neighbourhoods. Social media and local outlets circulated footage showing drivers frantically exiting their parked cars just as their vehicles filled with water. Additional structures susted damage; the central hospital experienced overflow as water crept into its corridors, captured in recent photographs. Monday evening, the National Meteorological Centre predicted intense rainfall over northern Libya, warning residents in wadis and low‑lying areas. Each summer, officials attempt to clear drainage channels and manholes, which frequently become blocked by desert‑blown sand, yet floods persist despite such preparations. These recurring inundations highlight the vulnerability of urban infrastructure to severe weather events. Early Thursday morning, municipal crews and the city’s road department mobilised to clear the main arterial routes, excavating mud and debris deposited by the torrential flows.
