Eli Lilly has instructed roughly 50 hospitals enrolled in a federal drug discount program to upload comprehensive claims data within the next five days, or they will forfeit the mandated price reductions.
The directive follows a January policy announcement by the company aimed at curbing what it describes as duplicate discounts paid to participating hospitals. This issue has sparked considerable controversy within the pharmaceutical sector and intensified a long‑standing dispute between drug manufacturers and hospitals over the 340B program.
For several years, more than 2,300 hospitals have complied with the request; however, some large health‑system networks across the United States have declined to comply, even after receiving recent follow‑up letters about the policy that took effect on February 1, according to Derek Asay, senior vice president for government strategy and federal accounts at Lilly. As many as 1,000 hospitals have yet to submit the required data.
