Eli Lilly announced Wednesday that its investigational therapy outperformed Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic in lowering blood glucose and promoting weight loss during a large-scale diabetes trial, strengthening the competitive profile of its candidate.
In the head-to-head evaluation, patients receiving the highest dose of Lilly’s retatrutide achieved a 2.2 percentage-point reduction in A1c, a key measure of blood sugar control, after 80 weeks. Patients on Ozempic saw a 1.8 percentage-point reduction over the same period.
Participants on the highest retatrutide dose also lost 20.9% of their body weight—a significant result given that individuals with diabetes typically experience minimal weight loss from medication. Those taking Ozempic lost 9.4% of their weight. These findings are based on participants who remained on treatment, not the entire study population.
