The body of 18‑year‑old Lily Hooper was discovered in Australian bushland following an intensive eight‑day search for the missing teen.
Police confirmed that while officials had previously reported the girl had been found alive, the body had eventually been verified as deceased at approximately 11:30 local time on Thursday during a thorough sweep of the Southern Highlands terrain within Nattai National Park.
Lily Hooper vanished after departing her Sydney home on 12 August while walking in a nearby national park; her family learned of her absence when she failed to return by 10 p.m. that evening.
Her vehicle was recovered in a parking lot at the base of a demanding trail inside Nattai National Park, providing officers with a starting point for the final searches.
Initially, confusion surrounded the girl’s condition. NSW Premier Chris Minns described her as being “found alive” before quickly correcting himself, stating that “Lily’s body has been found” and confirming she was deceased. He expressed profound sadness for her family and issued his apologies to the community.
A multi‑agency operation spanned the past week, involving numerous units from the New South Wales Police Force—including PolAir, the Rescue Unit, the Trail Bike Unit, the Mounted Unit, and the Dog Unit—as well as support from the Rural Fire Service, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and roughly 100 members of the Australian Defence Force.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese later honored Hooper in Parliament, characterising her death as an unfathomable tragedy and affirming her broad potential contributions to society.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, representing HO’s constituency, condemned the initial erroneous reports as particularly harsh for the family, noting the heartbreak caused by the mistaken announcement.
