From her early days in K‑pop to earning acclaim as an independent artist, Lim Kim has rarely pursued easy crossover routes. Her latest single, however, reimag ανθ simple Korean term into a runway‑ready track.

She unveiled “INSA” on July 9 in collaboration with British pop provocateur Bree Runway, positioning it as the pre‑release highlight for her upcoming album Exit to Nowhere. Accompanied by an Italian‑shot visualizer, the pair’s polished, dance‑infused track targets house and club listeners while also resonating with pop and K‑pop audiences.

The track’s title, “INSA,” translates to “greeting” or “salutation” in Korean, evoking the ritual of acknowledging others through words or gestures. In K‑pop, many groups perform an “insa” routine—a synchronized welcome—to connect with audiences.

Lim Kim frames this cultural ritual as a springboard for reflecting on her own encounters with fame, public scrutiny, and anxiety—experiences that began when she competed on Superstar K3 as a teenager 디. Co‑authoring the lyrics, she candidly addresses the exhaustion of upholding a polished persona while remaining emotionally detached inside.

Instead of turning introspection into a soaring ballad, Lim Kim enlisted Bree Runway to transform it into an accessible, club‑ready house track that draws on Runway’s vogue‑inspired sonic palette—a sound rooted in Black and LGBTQ+ ballroom culture. The collaboration injects a uniquely Korean concept into a broader global pop conversation, creating an unexpected cross‑cultural moment.

After stepping back from the limelight amid mounting label frustrations, Bree Runway connected instantly with the record’s emotional core.

Runway said: “I was immediately drawn to Lim Kim’s story. The idea of taking time out to recalibrate and reconnect with yourself resonated with me. As artists we evolve continuously, and I deeply respect anyone brave enough to chart their own path. Beyond that不断, this song is just fun; collaborations that unite different cultures energize me. I’m thrilled to be part of this Korean release that carries so much vitality. I can’t wait for listeners to experience it this summer.”

A press release revealed that prior to composing the track, Lim Kim admired Bree Runway and considered her the perfect partner—both sonically and emotionally. Her dance‑music instincts complemented the song’s energy, and the duo’s shared professional understanding cemented a meaningful collaboration (!). Melding Korean culture with house and voguing—genres birthed by Black and queer communities—represents a bold but commercially viable angle, echoing the recent success of acts such as XLOV, whose album sales and mainstream recognition have surged.

INSA sets the stage for Lim Kim’s upcoming Exit to Nowhere, releasing July 22, and marks her first solo project since 2019’s Generasian, which earned the 2020 Korean Music Awards’ Best Dance & Electronic Album. Issued through Universal Music Korea, Exit to Nowhere is described as a “broader narrative that unfolds through music and visuals, guiding each chapter toward clarity, self‑understanding, and ultimately an arrival at ‘nowhere.’”
