Lindsay Clancy juror had reasonable doubt but would not agree to acquit, foreperson says

A lone juror in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, the mother accused of the murder of her three children in Massachusetts, resisted accepting Clancy’s acquittal despite acknowledging reasonable doubt, according to the jury’s foreperson, Roni Carlson, in an interview broadcast on Monday.

Speaking to NBC 10 Boston just days after the trial ended in a mistrial, Carlson confirmed that among the three jurors interviewed, one holdout juror remained steadfast in opposing an acquittal based on her insistence that the defendant was not innocent.

“He acknowledged he had reasonable doubt, and I began filling out the acquisition forms eagerly. He stated, ‘I’m still not going to say that she’s not guilty by reason of insanity,’” said Carlson, a retired elementary school teacher.

The foreperson detailed that the jury included a member who was not adhering to court instructions regarding reasonable hesitation during the private deliberation process.

Throughout the trial, Clancy strangled her three young children in January 2023 before attempting to end her own life by jumping out of her bedroom window, which left her paralyzed.

Prosecutors argued that Clancy had intentionally caused the deaths of her children. The defense countered that the deceased mother had previously sought assistance for her declining mental health prior to the psychotic break, blaming the healthcare system for overmedication rather than providing proper diagnostic support.

The group of three jurors highlighted testimony indicating that the evidence depicted Clancy as a profoundly loving mother. They cited personal journals and her family dynamics as clear proof that she valued her children, suggesting she had reached a point where she lacked capacity for rational action.

“Everything proves she loved her children—infinite documents and her connection with her mother-in-law underscore how much she cared. Therefore, she clearly slipped and acted violently,” Carlson continued.

The judiciary intervened and declared a mistrial because the group could not form a unanimous verdict.

Clancy currently resides in a psychiatric hospital, and a status hearing has been set for 29 September. It remains to be seen if prosecutors will move forward with retrying her case.
