The legendary forward has officially concluded his international career with the Argentine national team at the age of 39, marking the end of a twenty-year tenure.
He featured in six World Cups, claiming the title in Qatar in 2022 and guiding his country to the final in 2026, where they fell to Spain.
His debut for the Albiceleste occurred back in 2005 during a friendly encounter against Hungary.
“This was a decision that caused immense pain, yet I recognize the moment has arrived,” Messi stated on his official Instagram account. “I can assure you that I always gave my all, not merely in recent years when we achieved everything, but throughout my entire career; I consistently fought and left everything on the pitch wearing this jersey to bring you joy and make you proud to be Argentine through football.”
“I depart with tranquility and pride, knowing I have delivered moments alongside my teammates that we once only dreamed of,” he added.
After the passing of his father, Jorge, in August, the star had admitted to having “serious doubts” about continuing to play football for “much longer”.
Messi’s contract with MLS club Inter Miami extends through the conclusion of the 2028 season.
