Liverpool have finalized a surprise loan agreement for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, set to join the club for the current season. The 27-year-old Uruguayan center-back will undergo a medical in the UK on Sunday ahead of his arrival, following the completion of a new contract at Barcelona through 2031.
Araujo, who joined Barcelona in 2018 and has since played over 200 games for the club, will bolster Liverpool’s defense after injuries to key players like Ibrahima Konate and Jimmy Laporte. He is also expected to address right-back vulnerabilities, as captain Virgil van Dijk remains the team’s only fully fit senior defender at the position.
Though a regular starter at Barcelona, Araujo has missed significant portions of the past season due to personal challenges, including depression, which he openly discussed in November 2025. His experience and versatility make him a strategic signing for Liverpool’s current defensive needs.
The defender previously played for Barcelona B before breaking into the first team in 2019. With fewer than 100 senior appearances and no pre-season participation due to lingering shoulder surgery, his loan move offers a fresh start for both parties.
