Defensively, the side failed to shield its flanks, conceding straightforward opportunities in the box and reverting to last season’s disjointed chemistry. With the Champions League approaching in just over a week, there is little room for error, and signing Bradley Barcola will not resolve every issue. Although Liverpool created sufficient goal-scoring opportunities, Forest remained dangerous on the counter, and a potentially soft Alisson penalty following a challenge on Neco Williams decided the outcome—a result a club of Liverpool’s caliber should not dictate.

It is no coincidence that Liverpool looked their most threatening late in the match when he shifted to right-back. However, with Curtis Jones having departed for Inter Milan, removing Szoboszlai from midfield leaves the squad dangerously unbalanced. Florian Wirtz is forced to drop deeper than ideal, Alexander Isak remains isolated despite needing service, and Cody Gakpo must wait for space to intervene.

Can Ronald Araujo Provide the Solution?

Implementing a back three with Ronald Araujo stepping into the lineup could alleviate some defensive pressures, though it presents a center-back depth dilemma. A potential solution involves deploying Araujo at right-back within a three-man defense, allowing Szoboszlai to slot back into midfield when cover is required.

While the transfer window remains open for additional defensive reinforcements, squad balance becomes a concern should Bradley Barcola arrive. He would upgrade the wide attacking options, but balancing him with Munoz and Gakpo proves difficult given that Wirtz and Isak are firmly entrenched in the starting eleven.

Liverpool operates with immense expectations, and these structural issues have long been masked by the caliber of Alisson and Virgil van Dijk. Now aged 33 and 35 respectively, they can no longer single-handedly stabilize the defense. Although the attacking department appears well-prepared for Mohamed Salah’s departure, the backline is ill-equipped for the post-peak era of its stars, a problem exacerbated by the ongoing fullback struggles.
