Tottenham Hotspur have no plans to entertain offers for Micky van de Ven, despite Liverpool reportedly identifying the Netherlands international as one of their leading defensive targets for next summer.
Liverpool are already looking ahead to life beyond Virgil van Dijk, whose future at Anfield remains uncertain beyond the current campaign.
Van de Ven would certainly fit the profile they are looking for, but convincing Spurs to sell one of their most important players looks anything but straightforward.
Liverpool view Van de Ven as key to defensive succession planning
According to Football Insider, Liverpool are considering a move for Van de Ven as they make long-term plans to strengthen their defence.
The 25-year-old has been admired at Anfield for some time, with his pace, Premier League experience and ability to operate on the left side of defence making him an obvious candidate to eventually replace Van Dijk.
However, Tottenham have made it clear they have no intention of letting him leave. Spurs regard Van de Ven as a central part of their defensive foundation and are expected to resist any approach from Liverpool or other interested clubs.
That stance has only been reinforced following recent developments.
Van de Ven signed a new long-term contract with Tottenham in August, giving the North London club significant control over his future and strengthening their negotiating position.
In the club’s official announcement at the time, the defender expressed his commitment to Tottenham and his enthusiasm for the direction of the project under manager Ange Postecoglou.
This makes any potential exit extremely difficult to envisage in the current climate.
Nevertheless, Liverpool’s interest is strategically sound. With Van Dijk entering the latter stages of his career, identifying a successor with similar attributes — pace, physical presence, and Premier League experience — represents prudent long-term planning for the Reds.
The primary obstacle remains financial. Tottenham face no contractual urgency to sell, meaning Liverpool would need to present an exceptionally large bid merely to initiate serious discussions about a transfer.
From Tottenham’s perspective, retaining Van de Ven should remain a non-negotiable priority unless an offer emerges that proves genuinely irresistible.
Following another challenging start to the season, losing one of their key defenders would only compound existing issues and create additional complications for the coaching staff to address.
