Beauty giant L’Oreal has acknowledged that the widespread use of weight loss drugs is impacting sales in the beauty and skincare sectors, prompting the company to develop targeted solutions for the physical side effects of rapid weight reduction.
Nicolas Hieronimus, the company’s chief executive, stated that the beauty market remains resilient despite a challenging global economic landscape, highlighting the rise of GLP-1 receptor agonists as a highly significant phenomenon for the industry.
Speaking on an investor call, Hieronimus noted that the surge in GLP-1 usage is particularly affecting consumer patterns in skincare and overall beauty consumption.
Despite these shifting dynamics, L’Oreal—whose portfolio includes flagship brands such as Maybelline and La Roche-Posay—reported a robust 7.7% increase in sales for the third quarter, surpassing analyst expectations.
The popularity of GLP-1 medication has surged in recent years, following clinical trials and real-world evidence showing that diabetes treatments like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro can induce substantial weight loss by suppressing appetite.
Although not a direct result of the medication itself, rapid weight loss frequently leads to loose skin, including noticeable sagging around the facial area.
To address this emerging concern, L’Oreal has engineered specialized skincare solutions under its SkinCeuticals and Kiehl’s brands, specifically formulated to complement GLP-1 treatments and mitigate skin sagging and other related side effects.
Strategically, L’Oreal is expanding its footprint in the clinical aesthetics sector, having increased its stake in the dermatology company Galderma to 20% in December.
According to industry reports, both L’Oreal and Galderma are currently conducting separate clinical trials focused on products tailored for GLP-1 users concerned about skin elasticity and facial changes.
Galderma is renowned for flagship aesthetic treatments such as Sculptra, a collagen-stimulating injectable, and Restylane, a widely used dermal filler.
In response to the growing trend, Galderma released a comprehensive study highlighting the rising use of GLP-1 drugs and the corresponding patient anxiety over facial aesthetic changes.
The firm’s survey of individuals using weight loss medications revealed that the vast majority perceived noticeable alterations in their facial appearance during their treatment journey.
