As part of NPR’s Latin Music Month takeover, running from September 15 through October 15, the Tiny Desk spotlight shines across genres—from jazz and Tejano to norteño and ska.
No stage is too small for Los Tigres del Norte, and none could hold the magnitude of their impact. Over six decades, this Mexican norteño band has rooted its career in community, gathering stories from loyal listeners and transforming the struggles of Latino life into music. Felix Contreras, co-host of Alt.Latino and a longtime friend of the band, captured their mission in an emotional introduction: “For as long as I can remember, these gentlemen have been giving us back our humanity.”
At the Tiny Desk, Los Tigres del Norte opens with an immigrant anthem that declares: “I didn’t cross the border / The border crossed me.” In the office space, that message lands with the force of a struck guitar chord or an accordion riff. It is one of many stories affirming the experiences of the Mexican families the band holds dear. On a global scale, their role expands: Los Tigres del Norte performs on behalf of Latin America, speaking truth to power with the declaration, “Somos más Americanos.”
