During the fourth season of Love Island UK in 2018, Megan Barton-Hanson approached her fellow contestant Wes Nelson for a conversation.
She had recently ended her relationship with Eyal Booker, citing a lack of emotional connection beyond physical attraction. With Wes, who had been paired with Laura Anderson since the season began, she chose to take the initiative rather than wait for him to act first.
“It’s pretty clear I have strong feelings for you,” she said. “I knew if I didn’t speak up, I’d regret it.”
Viewers soon dubbed her “Muggy Megan,” with some criticizing her for transitioning between relationships too rapidly and violating unspoken social norms. Others praised her candidness.
At the time, Barton-Hanson contended that she faced harsher judgment than male contestants. “There’s a clear double standard—women are scrutinized far more harshly,” she argued.
However, nearly a decade later, such behavior no longer seems exceptional. Historically, male contestants selected their partners first during the opening coupling. This year, the show’s format shifted, allowing women to make the initial choices.
