Northamptonshire has emerged as the T20 Blast’s most dominant force this season, securing nine victories and accumulating 36 points. The Steelbacks suffered just a single defeat – against Somerset on Sunday – before sealing their quarter-final berth with an emphatic win in Cardiff.
Ben Kellaway’s career-best 3-22 kept Glamorgan competitive, but Sam Billings’ blistering century (101*) and explosive contributions from Ricardo Vasconcelos (25) and Saif Zaib (25) powered Northants to 217-7. The visitors’ disciplined death-over bowling then restricted Glamorgan to 164 all out, with Calvin Harrison’s 3-20 and Zaib/Sales’ complementary spells preserving the win.
Meanwhile, Somerset’s fighting spirit kept their title hopes alive. Will Smeed’s 89 guided them to 214-6 against Derbyshire, despite Martin Andersson’s contrasting 3-33 performance. The result puts Somerset in a precarious position, requiring two wins from their final two matches to qualify.
Glamorgan’s rapid acceleration faltered after skipper Kiran Carlson’s 42 fell at the seventh over. Northants exploited the collapse, with Aneurin Donald’s 65 providing a brief lift for Derbyshire before Harry Came’s dismissal triggered their collapse. Daniel Sams’ 3-29 performance orchestrated Somerset’s ultimate victory, though the Falcons may need bolstering in their remaining fixtures.
