Maricarmen Abascal, whose resistance to eviction from her Madrid apartment sparked a nationwide protest movement, has died. Her plight mobilized hundreds of thousands of demonstrators and ultimately contributed to the calling of a general election after mass rallies across Spain.
The elderly woman, a resident of Madrid’s Retiro district, had been hospitalized after a fourth eviction attempt, but she succeeded in compelling the property fund that expelled her to withdraw and allow her return, following an agreement with the authorities.
