Democrats in Maine and across the nation are urgently seeking a new Senate nominee following rape allegations against Graham Platner, which led to the withdrawal of his most prominent supporters. If Platner exits before the Monday deadline, Maine state law would require the party to select a replacement by July 27. The selection process remains unspecified, with possibilities including a convention or statewide caucus in late July.
The decision poses significant internal challenges, as moderates, progressives, and Platner himself vie for influence over the nominee choice. Democrats are also reevaluating their vetting procedures after the Platner incident. The new candidate must rapidly build momentum and secure funding to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins, who has long been a formidable opponent for Democratic candidates.
Potential contenders include Troy Jackson, a progressive former state Senate president from rural Aroostook County, who previously supported Platner and has formed an exploratory committee. Dr. Nirav Shah, a former state health official and ex-CDC deputy director, is also considering a run after leading Maine’s pandemic response. Shenna Bellows, Maine’s secretary of state and former ACLU leader, who previously lost to Collins in 2014, is reportedly weighing an entry into the race. Jordan Wood, a progressive political strategist with ties to California Representative Katie Porter, is in discussions about rejoining the Senate bid after briefly pursuing a congressional seat. Valli Geiger, a registered nurse and former mayor, is exploring the possibility, having previously defended Platner’s transformation and supported his rape kit legislation efforts. Paige Loud, a 29-year-old social worker and Cherokee Nation citizen, recently filed with the FEC for the Senate race. Dan Kleban, a brewery co-founder who briefly entered the race before withdrawing, remains a potential write-in option.
