Firefighters work to extinguish a fire at the plant

A significant explosion triggered a large-scale fire at a key Quaker Oats manufacturing facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, early Saturday evening, deploying emergency responders to address the blaze engulfing the world’s largest oat milling plant.

Initial reports indicated heavy smoke and flames emanating from the north side of the facility, with thick black plumes visible over downtown Cedar Rapids as multiple firefighting units mobilized to contain the incident.

All employees were accounted for and uninjured by 6:25 p.m., according to local authorities, though fire crews remained on-site to fully extinguish remaining hotspots within the structure.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department confirmed the plant, operated by PepsiCo Foods US, processes over 2 million pounds of oats daily. Emergency services were dispatched at approximately 4:44 p.m. following reports of the explosion and active fire.

Additional personnel from Marion, Hiawatha, and Linn County Fire Departments assisted in the response effort. Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell emphasized in a public statement that the incident occurred in a section of the plant with minimal staffing, which mitigated potential harm.

Firefighters worked to suppress the flames through the evening, with most of the blaze extinguished by 6:25 p.m. No firefighters sustained injuries during the operation.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the explosion or assessed the extent of structural damage. PepsiCo Foods US has initiated an internal investigation to determine the origin of the incident.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department reiterated that all staff were safe and accounted for, attributing the lack of injuries to the timing and location of the incident within the facility.
