Manchester United’s summer transfer plans have been thrown into fresh uncertainty after Manuel Ugarte sustained a serious knee injury while representing Uruguay against Spain at the 2026 World Cup.
Ugarte was stretchered off during Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat after twisting his knee before half‑time. United remain awaiting a definitive assessment of the injury’s severity, but reports suggest it could be an ACL tear that would sideline him for nine to twelve months.
Man United transfer plans have now changed
United previously had agreed that the midfielder would either depart permanently or on loan this summer, a move that would have freed up wages and helped meet Profitability and Sustainability Regulations. That prospect now appears unlikely. Ugarte is expected to continue his rehabilitation at Carrington, and because the injury occurred while he was on international duty, the club can seek salary support through FIFA’s Club Protection Programme. While the scheme eases the financial burden, it does not resolve the on‑field lack of options.
In light of the new challenges, United have already pursued Atalanta midfield stalwart Ederson, with a reported £38.8 million valuation. The club also remains interested in West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, though competition from Tottenham is intensifying.
Signing a midfielder has become even more crucial
The injury has amplified the urgency of strengthening the midfield. Ederson would add energy and defensive rigor, but United will need additional options to maintain depth. Fernandes remains a target if the price fit the budget, yet the club must also prepare alternative profiles such as Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, and Felix Nmecha, depending on market availability and financial constraints.
Assuming Ugarte’s eventual return will resolve the situation could be a costly miscalculation. The loss of a potential sale and squad option means Carrick must act decisively before the transfer window becomes even tighter.
