Manav Suthar Embraces Patience as he Stars on Test Debut with Seven-Wicket Performance](https://example.com/manav-suthar-test-debut)
Young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar was overcome with emotion after a standout debut performance, helping India claim their largest-ever Test victory—a innings-and-300-run triumph over Afghanistan in the one-off Test.
The 23-year-old earned Player of the Match honors after capturing seven wickets in the match, spearheading India’s charge with a remarkable 6/33 in the first innings—a performance that established the foundation for the comprehensive win. Speaking post-match, Suthar described the experience as a career-defining moment he struggled to articulate.
“It’s an unreal feeling. Top of the world feeling. When I went in to bat, I felt good slowly after facing a few balls and when I bowled the first over I wanted to stick to similar lengths and line,” Suthar said after receiving the award to JioHotstar.
Born in Rajasthan, Suthar revealed he initially relied on his standard deliveries before adapting to the slow pitch conditions. He also reflected on dismissing Saleem Safi, who was given out LBW despite replays suggesting the ball pitched outside leg stump. Suthar stood by the decision, noting his confidence in the delivery and his conversation with captain Shubman Gill regarding the review.
“I tried to back my stock delivery but I understood that the pitch is slightly slow so I had to put in more effort. [On the DRS] I felt it was absolutely plumb in the heat of the moment,” he said with a smile.
Despite the acclaim for his debut, Suthar emphasized that consistency and patience are critical traits for Test bowlers. Reaffirming his philosophy, he added, “Bowling at the same spot is important. Test cricket is about patience so I hope I can be consistent with my bowling.”
His first-innings figures of 6/33 rank among the second-best by an Indian spinner on debut, surpassed only by Narendra Hirwani’s legendary 8/61 against the West Indies in 1988. Afghanistan were bundled out for 152 in their initial knock before being forced to follow on, and ultimately dismissed for 112 in their second innings. Washington Sundar (4/36) and Kuldeep Yadav (3/30) complemented Suthar’s heroics, sealing the historic victory on Day 3.
