Manchester United reportedly met with former Chelsea and Napoli manager Antonio Conte on Tuesday evening as pressure mounts on head coach Michael Carrick following a disastrous start to the 2026/27 campaign.

The Red Devils have endured a catastrophic opening to the season, with Carrick struggling to replicate the form he showed during his interim spell. United have managed just two victories from their first eleven matches across all competitions, a run that culminated in a humbling 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como on Tuesday night.

According to La Repubblica, club hierarchy spoke with Conte immediately following that European reverse. The Italian boasts a glittering résumé, having claimed the Premier League title with Chelsea alongside numerous major honours at Juventus, Inter Milan, and Napoli.

While Conte’s pedigree surpasses that of Carrick—and indeed previous permanent appointees Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Erik ten Hag, and Ruben Amorim—his candidacy carries significant risk. The 57-year-old has developed a reputation for brief tenures, frequently clashing with ownership and sporting directors over transfer policy and club strategy.

Given United’s desperate need for structural stability, the club may be better served exploring alternatives to Conte, even if that means backing a less proven candidate. That could yet mean extending Carrick’s tenure in the hope of an Arteta-style transformation at Arsenal, though each passing defeat makes that gamble increasingly untenable for the Old Trafford hierarchy.
