Manuel Neuer to Retire After 2026-27 Season, Cementing World Cup Legacy

Manuel Neuer has solidified his status as one of soccer’s greatest goalkeepers, maintaining elite performance for over two decades while securing every major honor. Following his record-breaking 2026 World Cup campaign, the German icon is set to conclude his professional career after the 2026–27 season.

The 40-year-old, nearing his 41st birthday in March, has signed a contract extension with Bayern Munich and will compete for Germany in the 2026 World Cup. His current agreement expires in June 2027, a timeframe he views as his final chapter between the goals.

At Bayern’s preseason camp in Tegernsee, Neuer reflected on his decision: “In 85% of cases, I would have retired, but this team, staff, and coaching structure make it pure joy. We consistently compete for titles, and this group is at the pinnacle.”

Despite a potential transition to younger keeper Jonas Urbig, Neuer remained the primary goalkeeper during Bayern’s 2025-26 treble-winning season. He made 37 appearances, allowing 40 goals while maintaining 11 clean sheets.

Though Bayern’s younger keeper was expected to gradually take over, Neuer continued to dominate. He remarked: “This time feels like a farewell. I don’t play thinking it’s my last game, but this season truly feels like my retirement.”

Neuer’s World Cup Legacy as a Goalkeeping Icon

After Euro 2024, Neuer briefly stepped away from international play but was recalled for the 2026 World Cup due to his sustained excellence. This move solidified his place in history.

By appearing in Germany’s group-stage game against Ivory Coast, Neuer became the all-time record holder for World Cup goalkeeper appearances with 21 matches, surpassing Hugo Lloris (20). He also matched Lothar Matthaus’ national record by participating in his fifth World Cup, spanning 2010 to 2026.

At 40 years and 79 days, Neuer became the oldest German to compete in a major international tournament, surpassing Matthaus’ previous record.
