Manzambi Emerges as Europe’s Premier Young Talent

Manzambi is now among the contenders for the Best Young Player in the World award, alongside Lamine Yamal of Barcelona, Real Madrid’s Yan Diomande, and Manchester City’s new midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.

He netted three goals in four matches for Switzerland at the World Cup, but a knee injury forced him out of the tournament, just one year after his senior international debut.

This swift ascent follows a period when he regularly returned to Freiburg’s academy to handle his laundry.

Bernhard Weis, who gave Manzambi his debut for Freiburg Under-19s, told BBC Sport: “He is playing for the professionals and he comes to us at the academy and brings some dirty clothes.”

Without a washing machine, he would come to the academy and do his laundry.

He would talk with them, then collect young players from the under‑13 and under‑14 age groups and escort them to the train station.

He would tell them, ‘come with me, I’ll take you to the station,’ so they could get home. That is Johan Manzambi.

Regarding his profile, Weis did not anticipate a Ballon d’Or nomination so soon.

He added, ‘I didn’t see that. I saw him in the first team, but I never imagined this opportunity.’

His first six months at Freiburg were challenging; he lacked strength and stability, gaining five kilograms before believing the time had come to become faster and stronger.

Massimo Lombardo, Servette’s academy director, concurred. He began working with Manzambi at age 15, overseeing his early development before the player joined Freiburg at 17 in 2023.

“It is a genuine surprise to many that he can achieve something remarkable so quickly,” he told BBC Sport.

“For me, his impact stems from his mindset, personality, enthusiasm and courage. He now possesses the technical, tactical and physical abilities to excel in England.”
