Marco Rubio on Iran’s Nuclear Threat, Energy Markets, and the AI Frontier

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told NBC’s “Today” that President Trump remains open to meeting with Iranian leaders, though no such encounter is currently scheduled, reiterating that Tehran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.

On the economy, Rubio acknowledged that American households are bearing significant costs but argued that energy prices would be substantially higher if Iran possessed nuclear capabilities, noting that the southern lane of the Strait of Hormuz is now clear and oil flows have recovered to roughly 60 to 70 percent of previous levels. He also attributed recent price jumps to the Houthi attack on a Saudi pipeline.

Regarding artificial intelligence, Rubio said the administration believes the United States must lead in AI development while establishing appropriate guardrails, comparing the challenge to the regulation of nuclear energy.

On media access, Rubio clarified that the White House is not closing news outlets but is restricting their workspace inside the building, stating that the President should not be surrounded by journalists who do not honestly cover his administration. He added that no changes to his traveling press pool have been discussed.
