Margo Price has released her protest album ‘Days of Unrest,’ featuring collaborations with revered folk artist Joan Baez and the Memphis Mariachi band. The record includes a reimagined version of her cover of Woody Guthrie’s ‘Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos),’ now accompanied by Joan Baez’s vocals. Stream or watch the accompanying video below, where the track sheds light on the struggles of migrant workers during the Trump administration.
In a press release, Price shared, “I’ve been performing ‘Deportee’ for years, making it ideal for inclusion on this album. Hearing Joan Baez on this recording is truly surreal—she’s been a lifelong inspiration, both musically and as someone who has embraced the role of a cultural advocate.”
The album, produced by Matt Ross-Spang, features renditions of Bob Dylan’s ‘Maggie’s Farm’ and a rework of Charlie Daniels’ ‘Long Haired Country Girl’ with guest Billy Swan. Price also reinterprets Blaze Foley’s ‘Oval Room,’ noting, ‘Foley wrote this song in 1984 about Ronald Reagan, but its message critiques systems that favor the wealthy—a theme especially relevant today. Covering this song, along with others on ‘Days of Unrest,’ is my way of protest. I’m also physically showing up at the Capitol alongside my colleagues, Representative Justin Jones and Representative Pearson, but singing these tracks in concerts has provided a deeply healing outlet for both me and my audience.'”
The album includes original tracks such as ‘Can’t Stand Still,’ a piece from her early Nashville band Buffalo Clover, and a three-part instrumental suite titled ‘San Marcos,’ created with her partner Jeremy Ivey and the Price Tags. Additionally, the album will be available on vinyl, with proceeds supporting the Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project.
