Despite a successful spell in the Scottish Women’s Premier League, Marina Olid arrived at Manchester United as a relative unknown in English football.
The start was challenging. United lost to London City Lionesses on the opening night of the Women’s Super League season and then suffered a 5-0 home defeat against Chelsea a week later, with the team managing just two shots on target between the two matches.
However, a draw at Arsenal offered encouragement, and United’s subsequent string of four wins across the WSL and League Cup, accompanied by 18 goals, suggests Olid’s ideas are beginning to take hold.
Still, she is not yet fully convinced.
“I am very happy for the players because they deserve it,” she said. “We have started to find clarity in a lot of areas, and they fight for each other.”
“But there is still plenty to improve. We created chances, yet our final pass and finishing need to be sharper. That will come.”
Liverpool manager Gareth Taylor offered a more critical assessment of Olid’s approach, pointing to his side’s slump after two defeats in their last three matches.
“They were very direct, and we fell into their trap,” he said. “Their goalkeeper was effectively kicking out of her hands.”
“We need to be braver, and there are lessons to learn. This was the first time we have not been a good reflection of ourselves.”
