Marine Corps Secures Initial Contract for Autonomous Ground Vehicle Production
The Marine Corps has finalized a significant contract with Overland AI, securing $19.7 million to develop more than a dozen autonomous ground vehicles by early 2027.

This development is part of the Marine Air Defense Integrated Systems program, which supports the service’s counterdrone strategy and resupply missions. Byron Boots, Overland AI’s CEO, emphasized the growing demand from U.S. operational units for autonomous technology. The company demonstrated its prototypes with the Marine Corps on the Remotely Operated Ground Unit for Expeditionary Fires program.

The autonomous vehicles are designed to integrate with existing platforms like the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). Marketed for resupply, ISR, and breaching tasks, the platform will be adaptable to various mission requirements. Initial focus will be on establishing a reliable supply capability for other systems, with potential expansion to intelligence and surveillance roles.

The agreement utilizes an APFIT acquisition tool to expedite the process, aligning with Pentagon efforts to accelerate fielding innovative technologies. Contracts often remain confidential, including detailed specifications on vehicle capabilities and production timelines.

These autonomous systems are poised to enhance operational efficiency and safety, allowing military operators to extend reach through intelligent ground solutions.
