Bill Murray has long been the prominent figure of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
The acclaimed actor and comedian has entertained fans along the Monterey Peninsula since his early 1990s participation, enduring walk‑off rule infractions, winning the pro‑am title in 2011, and once sending a teddy bear into the crowd with a punt.
Chicago Cubs legend Mark Grace recounts his experience playing alongside Murray on the newest episode of GOLF’s Subpar Podcast, hosted by Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz.
Grace described the atmosphere as a red‑carpet affair, highlighting the large galleries and after‑party vibe. He likened the setting to Bing Crosby’s era, suggesting it should have been called the Bill Murray experience at Pebble Beach. He added that Murray’s presence—referencing his films *Stripes* and *Caddyshack*—often provokes laughter without saying a word, as he playfully teases others.
Grace recalled a particular pro‑am where Murray grew frustrated with former Vice President Dan Quayle for lingering over a short putt at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
Grace recounted that Quayle was lining up a two‑foot putt, taking his time, and after repeated delays Bill shouted, “Hurry up!” The comment was met with stunned silence, as if a fart had echoed through a church.
