US stocks edged lower on Wednesday as investors braced for quarterly results from tech giants Alphabet and Tesla, while ongoing trade tensions and climbing oil prices added pressure to market sentiment.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.1%, and the S&P 500 slipped 0.3%. The Nasdaq Composite led the decline, falling 0.8%, marking a pullback after gains in the previous session.
Market participants are closely watching the upcoming earnings reports from Alphabet and Tesla, the first of the so-called “Magnificent Seven” companies to release second-quarter results this season. Analysts are particularly interested in whether Alphabet can demonstrate returns on its significant investments in artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, Tesla’s capital expenditure plans will be under scrutiny as the company advances its automation strategy under CEO Elon Musk.
Elsewhere, Super Micro Computer shares jumped following the announcement of a record backlog, despite a challenging environment for AI hardware suppliers. IBM is set to report its quarterly earnings after experiencing a sharp drop in stock price last week due to a cautious outlook. GE Vernova reported stronger-than-expected revenue and an expanding order backlog, though its earnings per share fell short of estimates.
On the trade front, President Trump signaled plans to replace temporary tariffs with more permanent measures, potentially including a 100% duty on imported generic drugs. A new 25% tariff on Brazilian goods also took effect on Wednesday, reflecting broader protectionist trends.
Oil prices continued their upward trend amid escalating conflict in the Middle East. The US has conducted over ten consecutive nights of airstrikes targeting Iran, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently informing Congress that military spending related to the campaign has reached $37.5 billion.
