Australia finished on 368 for six, with Marnus Labuschagne making 111, Mitchell Smith 61 and Cameron Carey 57, to draw with the CSA Invitation XI, who posted 318 for seven, highlighted by Neil Brand’s 152 and a solitary wicket for Pat Cummins’s counterpart Hazlewood.
Within 50 kilometres of his birthplace, Marnus Labuschagne struck a rapid, confidence‑boosting century as Australia wrapped up their warm‑up fixture with a solid day at the crease.
Hailing from Klerksdorp, about 30 kilometres along the N12 from Potchefstroom, Labuschagne reached his century from just 76 balls before retiring shortly after. The CSA Invitational XI’s bowling was modest and arguably below first‑class standards, but aside from a thick edge that slipped through gully, Labuschagne remained in complete control, delivering powerful drives and crisp clips.
Unlike the passionate atmosphere of his maiden ODI hundred at the same venue in 2020, this century came with a quieter acknowledgment of local support amid a modest crowd. Labuschagne’s Test position remains under intense scrutiny following a three‑year drought without a Test century and an average of 25.43 since the 2023 Ashes. Nonetheless, he is expected to keep his spot at number three for the opening Test in Durban next week.
Neil Brand’s opening‑day century set the tone as Australia exercised restraint with their bowlers, while the hosts struggled to capitalise on promising starts in benign conditions; however, the rest of the top order endured long innings.
Travis Head was brilliantly caught in the slips by Jiveshan Pillay on his second chance, while Matt Renshaw edged Christopher King’s delivery from round the wicket – King being the most impressive of the seamers. Renshaw, who missed yesterday’s fielding practice after a wrist blow in the final ODI, took to the crease on Sunday and showed no lingering concerns.
Renshaw’s recall to the Test squad for the Bangladesh series in Mackay, following Jake Weatherald’s omission, continues Australia’s recent rotation of opening batsmen since early 2024.
Labuschagne anchored the innings, sharing a 115‑run third‑wicket partnership with Steven Smith. Smith was distant from his usual fluency, looking occasionally frustrated in a match that offered little competitive spark. He began to loosen his stance after reaching fifty and retired at the tea interval.
Beau Webster was promoted to number five, ahead of Alex Carey and Cooper Connolly, who have featured in the ODI series. When Carey entered after Smith’s retirement, he survived a robust lbw appeal on the first ball while sweeping left‑arm bowler Jade de Klerk.
Carey needed 16 balls to get off the mark, then accelerated to fifty with another 41 runs, adding 76 for the wicket with Webster before the latter retired. Carey then drove elegantly to cover against Brand, while Connolly— who remains in contention for Durban should Cameron Green be unavailable— and captain Pat Cummins finished the day, shaking hands with 16 overs still in hand.
Nic Maddinson arrived in Potchefstroom on Saturday evening after a surprise recall, and the team will move to Durban on Monday, where the series proper begins.
