Martin Kimani, a Kenyan diplomat, has been appointed Assistant Secretary‑General for Africa at the United Nations.
UN Secretary‑General António Guterres announced Kimani’s appointment to the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations.
He succeeds Ghana’s Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee as the holder of the position.
The appointment positions the seasoned diplomat at the centre of the United Nations’ initiatives to prevent conflict, facilitate peace negotiations and foster durable peace across Africa and other regions beset by instability.
Kimani’s extensive experience with the United Nations includes his tenure as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York from 2020 to 2024.
He previously chaired the Council’s Ad Hoc Working Group on Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa and co‑chaired the Informal Expert Group on Climate and Security in 2022.
In 2023, he served as President of the Executive Boards of the UN Development Programme, the UN Population Fund, and the UN Office for Project Services.
His earlier government positions include Director of Kenya’s National Counter‑Terrorism Centre and Special Envoy to the President for Countering Violent Extremism from 2015 to 2020.
