Hundreds of police, equipped with batons and shields, are stationed around the rally venue.
Thousands of demonstrators gathered in New Delhi, India’s capital, to call for the election chief’s resignation, protesting recent alterations to voter rolls that opposition parties allege benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governing party.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi headed the Sunday rally, which forms part of a protest movement lasting over a month that challenges the redrawing of electoral lists and the actions of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Opposition parties claim that the removal of more than 130 million names from voter registers disproportionately impacts Muslims and other minority groups deemed unlikely to support the Hindu‑nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Election Commission denies any partisan bias and states that voters whose names were mistakenly removed can re‑register.
The BJP accuses opposition parties of subverting democratic processes by contesting lawful electoral procedures, while India’s next general election is scheduled for 2029.
Authorities heightened security measures and issued traffic diversions ahead of the march from central New Delhi to the historic Ramlila Maidan.
Hundreds of police, some armed with batons and shields, were deployed around the rally site together with riot‑control vehicles, while demonstrators waved Indian and party flags and opposition leaders rode in an open‑top jeep.
Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda described the demonstration as a “carefully orchestrated drama.”
He told ANI that the events at Ramlila Maidan are not an expression of democratic respect, but rather a calculated attempt to plunge the nation into anarchy under the guise of democracy.
Opposition parties, student groups, and the youth‑led Cockroach Janta Party have organized near‑daily protests since late September, demanding Kumar’s resignation.
The demonstrations were triggered when Kumar’s two deputies voiced concerns about alterations to voter lists, registration procedures, and digital systems.
Analysts characterize the protests and rising opposition support as Modi’s most serious political crisis since his inauguration in 2014.
