Mass Evacuations as European Wildfires Displace Over 300,000 Residents

Approximately 220,000 individuals have been evacuated from the major forest fire raging in southwestern France, which threatens the city of Bordeaux, according to French authorities.

Recent evacuations have targeted villages surrounding Bordeaux, and a 60‑kilometre stretch of the A63 highway connecting Bordeaux to the Spanish border has been closed due to the fires, regional authorities reported.

Tens of thousands additional residents have been evacuated from other wildfires burning in France and central Spain.

Authorities in the Gironde region, which includes Bordeaux, issued overnight evacuation orders for five additional localities, some located on the city’s outskirts.

The statement noted that strong winds fanned the flames overnight, accelerating the spread of a fire that has been out of control since midweek.

Thousands sought refuge in emergency shelters across France and Spain on Sunday after wildfires forced more than 300,000 people to abandon their homes and holiday accommodations.

The fires have destroyed homes, displaced populations at an unprecedented scale, and triggered one of the largest peacetime civilian evacuations in French history, with major fires still active in both countries.

One fatality was reported in eastern Spain, and authorities ordered new evacuations around Bordeaux and in the Madrid metropolitan area as they warned of a challenging night ahead.

Families took shelter on camp beds in exhibition halls and gymnasiums after escaping walls of smoke and flame that swept through forests and tourist zones, leaving residents and holidaymakers uncertain about returning.

The Gironde fire service reported that the blaze produced a rare pyro‑cumulonimbus cloud, generating its own winds and whirlwinds, rendering the fire “erratic and unmanageable,” according to firefighter Captain Nicolas Braz.

Spanish authorities also ordered new evacuations in the vicinity of Toledo, southwest of Madrid.
