Tens of thousands of Israelis gathered in central Jerusalem on Sunday, calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s removal and demanding an independent investigation into the intelligence and security breakdowns that preceded Hamas’s October 7th cross-border assault.
The demonstration, one of the largest in recent months, underscored growing public frustration over the government’s handling of national security issues as Israel prepares for snap elections scheduled for Tuesday, October 27th. Protesters carried Israeli flags and banners reading “Accountability” and “New Leadership,” echoing demands for a shift in governance following the deadliest attack on Israeli soil in decades.
“We cannot allow those responsible for the failures of October 7th to continue leading us,” said one demonstrator. “We need a government that prioritizes our safety and our future.”
Opposition leaders addressed the crowd, framing the upcoming vote as a referendum on leadership and national direction. Polling suggests a narrow margin among voters, with economic concerns and security policy dominating public discourse.
Netanyahu, who has served multiple terms as prime minister, has faced mounting criticism over his government’s preparedness ahead of the Hamas-led attack. His office did not respond to requests for comment ahead of the election.
